When David arrived at Carefor’s Mackay Centre in Pembroke late last year, he was a senior in crisis.

At 79, he was living in an unsafe situation that left him isolated, struggling with his health, and without the support he needed. Within weeks of moving into Mackay Centre, he regained strength, became socially engaged, and rediscovered a sense of belonging.

David’s story reflects a growing challenge facing seniors across Ontario. As living costs rise and affordable housing options disappear, many older adults who can no longer live safely on their own have nowhere affordable to turn. For these seniors, organizations like Carefor are often the last safety net.

A Crisis Many Seniors Face
Before coming to Mackay Centre, David’s mobility challenges made daily life increasingly difficult. Although he received home care services, he was no longer safe living independently. His niece, Jackie, recalls, “I don’t know what would have happened to him if Carefor didn’t take him.”

Many seniors face the same reality. Living on fixed incomes, they cannot afford private retirement living yet require more support than can be provided at home. With a shortage of affordable supportive housing, especially in rural communities, seniors are often left with impossible choices: remain in unsafe housing, stay in hospital longer than necessary, or risk homelessness.

Carefor Steps In
When hospital staff determined David could not return home, his family searched urgently for an affordable option. Carefor Mackay Centre was the only retirement home able to accommodate his limited income. By accessing available subsidies, staff found a way to make it work.

The impact was immediate. Within two months, David was healthier, more active, and connected to a vibrant community. He joined programs, played bingo, made friends, and proudly referred to his room as “his apartment.” As Jackie said, “He’s a changed man.”

A Community Solution
David’s experience highlights an important truth: safe, affordable housing with support can transform lives. While Carefor helps many seniors remain at home, some reach a point where living alone is no longer safe. They need somewhere they can receive the care they need at a price they can afford.

That is why Carefor works with donors and community partners to ensure vulnerable seniors have access to stable housing and supportive care. As Jackie puts it, “If not for the support of Carefor and the community, people like my uncle would be in even more dire straits.”
