Job Description
  • What You Will Do:
    • Maintaining a clean, safe environment
    • Performing tasks according to duty sheet
    • Setting up equipment and supplies for food preparation
    • Assists in prepares meals, dessert, and/or snacks following standardized approved recipes, being careful to minimize waste and leftovers, and cook food according to sanitation and standardized guidelines pertaining to food preparation
    • Cleanup of kitchen and dining area
    • Serving meals to clients/residents
    • Ensuring timely service of meals
    • Handling and storing all left over foods according to food handling guidelines
    • Makes observations of resident behaviour and intervenes according to job expectation e.g. nutritional intake, disruptive behaviour in dining room, attendance for meals, general concerns affecting operations of the dietary department
    • Report observed concerns to supervisor or designate
    • Becoming familiar with individual resident’s dietary preferences, allergies, and diet restrictions
    • Assisting residents, if needed, to cut food or pour beverages
    • Promptly reports any problems, accidents, emergency situations, and complaints of residents regarding service to the supervisor or designate
    • Functions and reports in compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety legislation, regulations, and Carefor policies and procedures
    • Reports the absence of or defect in any equipment or protective device of which he/she is aware and which may endanger him/herself or another worker
    • Reports any violations of the Health and Safety Act or the regulations, or the existence of any hazard
    • Ensures all workplace incidents are reported in a timely manner in accordance with legislation, and Carefor policies and procedures for workplace injuries and incidents
    • Performing other duties/tasks as assigned by manager
  • Qualifications
    • Completion of Grade 10 or equivalent is preferred
    • Food Handling and Safety certificate
    • WHMIS certification

The Opportunity: Full-Time Permanent Cook – Carling Adult Day Program

Job Description
  • What You Will Do:
    • Orders required food items and supplies per the planned menu
    • Collaborates on the development of menus for various themed activities
    • Ensures all food orders are received, covered, labelled, dated, and stored properly
    • Follows standardized recipes for the planned menu including special diets
    • Thaws meat and other frozen foods as required
    • Cleans all produce needed for food preparation
    • Prepares meats, desserts, pastries, soups, sauces, vegetables, salads, cereals, eggs, and luncheon items according to the menu and hours of service
    • Cooks food according to required temperature/methods
    • Stores all leftover foods at the required temperature and in appropriate containers (noting dates for rotation purposes)
    • Adheres to standard portions determined for the program
    • Serves or packages food per program specifications/activities
    • Courteous, friendly, and patient when interacting with clients and caregivers
    • Reports to the Supervisor any observations, behaviours or incidents involving clients
    • Performs duties in organized manner and according to standard practices
    • Suggests to the Supervisor ways to improve processes or quality work
    • Turns all cooking equipment on and off ensuring safe operation of all equipment
    • Functions and reports in compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety legislation, regulations, and Carefor policies and procedures.
    • Participates in health and safety training including WHMIS and applies this knowledge in the workplace
    • Wears or uses any/all protective equipment or clothing provided by Carefor and does not interfere with protective devices as to change or negate their functions
    • Reports the absence of or defect in any equipment or protective device, and which may endanger self or other worker
    • Reports any violations of the Health and Safety Act or the regulations, or the existence of any hazard
    • Does not use or operate any equipment, machine, device, or work in a manner that may endanger self or other worker
    • Ensures all workplace incidents are reported in a timely manner in accordance with legislation, and Carefor policies and procedures for workplace injuries and incidents (eg. WSIB injuries, infection control)
    • Adheres to the Carefor standards for conduct and behavior and upholds Carefor’s Core Values
    • Ensures that confidential information relating to clients, work colleagues, suppliers and Carefor’s operations is properly protected and not disclosed to third parties, unless allowed or required under relevant law or regulation
    • Treats all people with respect and undertakes duties with care and diligence
    • Does not use information obtained in the course of employment for personal financial gain; nor allows that information be used to obtain financial benefit for any other person or company
    • Ensures all dealings with clients, suppliers and other parties are kept at arm’s length to avoid the possibility of actual or perceived conflicts of interest

    • Assists with table set up for meals

  • Qualifications
    • Minimum Grade 12 or equivalent.
    • Food Handlers Certificate
    • 3 years’ experience in food preparation in a commercial or retirement residential setting
    • Experience in entrée, soup, baking and salad production from fresh and/or frozen
    • food/produce/meats.
    • Experience with preparing food for regular and special diets
    • Experience with use of various kitchen equipment
    • Working knowledge of the Canada Food Guide
    • Ability to understand oral and written instructions and to calculate recipe quantities
    • Able to lift 40 pounds, to stand for long periods of time and walk short distances
    • Ability to tolerate heat in kitchen area
    • Team player, enthusiastic and positive
    • Excellent time management and organizational skills
    • Effective communicator
    • Sensitive to the needs of older adults and clients living with dementia

  • What can we offer you

    The hiring range for this position is $40,404.00 to $42,276.00 per year, which reflects the expected starting salary based on qualifications and experience. Please note, this is not the full salary range for the position. Opportunities for growth within the full salary range are available in alignment with organizational policies and performance.

The Opportunity: Full-Time Rover Cook – Lancaster & Ingleside
