The Opportunity: Casual, Part time Respite House Assistant

Working as part of a team, the Respite House Assistant is responsible for facilitating the client’s stay at the Respite House by promoting and supporting their abilities/strengths. The Respite Assistant will manage the client’s physical, social, emotional and spiritual care in keeping with the mission, goals, and objectives of the Respite House and within the framework of Carefor’s policies, procedures and standards. The incumbent will be responsible for recreation programming, a number of housekeeping duties and meal prep for guests to ensure smooth operation of the Respite House.

Job Description
  • What You Will Do:
    • Assist with personal support tasks reflecting the needs of the individual/family
    • Assist with daily housekeeping duties (sweeping, dusting, tidying, bed-making etc.)
    • Facilitate meaningful activities to ensure guest’s enjoy their stay
    • Actively participate in program planning, problem-solving and decision making
    • Plan, lead and participate in a varied program of meaningful one-on-one and small group activities geared to the guests’ abilities and preferences
    • Support the guest’s need for supervision/cueing/assistance with bathing, dressing, eating, toileting and mobilizing
    • Assist with laundry (bed linen, towels etc.) for the program
    • Undertake meal preparation and other kitchen duties
    • Help create and maintain welcoming, home-like environment for guests
    • Maintain a clean and safe environment
    • Encourage guests to contribute to the tasks involved in running of the program, to the best of their abilities.
    • Work as part of a team that includes staff, volunteers, guests and family members
  • Qualifications
    • Experience working with individuals with dementia
    • Ontario Certified Personal Support Worker Certificate and/or National Association of Career Colleges (NAC) Certificate, or Certificate in Home Support Worker (Level II, III), or Developmental Service Worker program, Health Care Aide, Foreign-Trained BScN or Doctor, Paramedic Graduate, BScN Nursing Student, or second year RPN student.
    • Demonstrated ability to work with seniors living with special needs
    • Ability to provide and implement recreation activities with the Guests
    • Good assessment skills
    • Ability to work within a structured environment independently and collaboratively within the team
    • Ability to provide Activities of Daily Living
    • Ability to provide Instrumental Activities of Daily Living (e.g. assistance with medication)
    • Ability to stand for long periods of time, lifting, and stretch
    • Ability to understand, speak, read and write English fluently
    • Ability to understand and speak fluently in French
    • Positive outlook and welcoming personality
    • Self-motivated, patience and flexibility
    • Excellent communication skills/ interpersonal skills
    • Ability to take direction well
    • Ability to adjust to working in a multicultural environment
    • Excellent decision making skills and ability to problem solve

    Job type: Part time, Casual- 6 shifts/biweekly or 3 shifts/biweekly

    Salary: $19.67/hr-$24.59/hr

    Flexible Language Requirement:

    • French not required

    Schedule:

    • 8-hour shift
    • Day shift (7am-3:15pm), Evening shift (3pm-11:15pm), Overnight shift (11pm-7:15am)
