The Opportunity: Driver – Casual (0 FTE or 0 hours bi-weekly)

Under the supervision of the Transportation Supervisor  the driver will be assigned a vehicle in the Carefor fleet to transport clients safely and efficiently to non-urgent medical appointments, Day Programs etc. Drivers will ensure clients are picked up and dropped off to attend their appointments as scheduled and assists clients as necessary. Interacts and communicates effectively with clients, customers, coworkers, physicians, public, volunteers, and other organizations.

This is a Casual Driver role in Winchester, Ontario.

Job Description
  • What You Will Do:
    • Pick up at specified location, at designated time and transport to their destination on time.
    • Guide or assist client to get in and out of the vehicle
    • Escort clients as required from door to door and if necessary, ensure the appropriate person at the destination is aware of the client’s arrival.
    • Load mechanical aids, handling equipment safely and carefully to prevent damage. Ensure aids or other items are secured in the vehicle
    • Reports any incident or concern regarding client to manager, e.g. changes in condition, increasing frailty, confusion or forgetfulness
    • Carries out Daily Inspection and records.
    • Does not operate the vehicle if safety features on the vehicle are not operating properly e.g. brake lights, turn signals, back up signal.
    • Record on the Daily Inspection sheet and reports any mechanical deficiencies e.g. improperly operating signal lights, low tires, unusual sounds.
    • Keep interior and exterior of vehicle clean – daily removing garbage and other items; weekly thorough cleaning of interior and exterior (weather permitting).
    • May be assigned to take vehicle to the service center for maintenance.
    • May be required to carry out minor maintenance such as changing windshield wipers, air in tires.
    • Keeps the vehicle at least ¾ full of fuel at all times
    • Accurately completes records of drives, mileage, fares, and time as required by Carefor
    • Attend in-service or department meetings as scheduled
    • Functions and reports in compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety legislation, regulations, and Carefor policies and procedures
    • Reports the absence of or defect in any equipment or protective device of which he/she is aware and which may endanger him/herself or another worker
    • Reports any violations of the Health and Safety Act or the regulations, or the existence of any hazard
    • Ensures all workplace incidents are reported in a timely manner in accordance with legislation, and Carefor policies and procedures for workplace injuries and incidents
  • Qualifications
    • Secondary school education preferred
    • Must have a current valid driver’s license, Class G or higher in the province of Ontario (not graduated license)
    • No known health conditions that may impair driving safety
    • Must be at least 25 years of age for insurance purposes
    • Must have some basic knowledge of technology such as GPS, cell phones, access to emails etc
  • Experience
    • Minimum 3 years driving experience with a clean driving record
    • Experience working with seniors and/or persons with disabilities is an asset.
  • Skills
    • Effective communication skills (verbal, written)
    • Knowledge of geographical area that you will be working in – Renfrew County, Eastern Counties and Ottawa is an asset
    • Travel to rural areas
    • Ability to take direction well, and work independently
    • Learn and use a GPS
    • Evaluate situations and use policies and procedures as guidelines
    • Ability and available to work flexible hours including shift work, days, evening, weekends
    • Adjust to changing procedures and schedules
    • Ability to sit for long periods of time
    • Ability to move and/or lift wheelchairs, walkers or other mechanical aids on a frequent basis
    • Physically provide support to frail clients

Job Description
  • What You Will Do:
    • Maintaining a clean, safe environment
    • Performing tasks according to duty sheet
    • Setting up equipment and supplies for food preparation
    • Assists in prepares meals, dessert, and/or snacks following standardized approved recipes, being careful to minimize waste and leftovers, and cook food according to sanitation and standardized guidelines pertaining to food preparation
    • Cleanup of kitchen and dining area
    • Serving meals to clients/residents
    • Ensuring timely service of meals
    • Handling and storing all left over foods according to food handling guidelines
    • Makes observations of resident behaviour and intervenes according to job expectation e.g. nutritional intake, disruptive behaviour in dining room, attendance for meals, general concerns affecting operations of the dietary department
    • Report observed concerns to supervisor or designate
    • Becoming familiar with individual resident’s dietary preferences, allergies, and diet restrictions
    • Assisting residents, if needed, to cut food or pour beverages
    • Promptly reports any problems, accidents, emergency situations, and complaints of residents regarding service to the supervisor or designate
    • Functions and reports in compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety legislation, regulations, and Carefor policies and procedures

  • What You Will Do:

    You will make an impact in the following ways:

    • Assist in the activities of daily living, including eating, dressing, transferring, grooming, and bathing
    • Provide laundering of clothes and linens
    • Provide light cleaning
    • Provide respite care
    • Provide light meal preparation
    • Provide cognitive, social, and compassionate support
    • Document reports for clients on their plan of care and any changes in the behaviour of daily routines
    • Other related duties and tasks as assigned by the supervisor in compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety legislation, regulations, and Carefor policies and procedures
  • Qualifications

    We are looking for individuals who:

    • Are capable of making a commitment of at least 15 hours/week
    • Are flexible to accommodate day shifts from 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. or evening shifts from 3:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. and commit to shifts every second weekend (both Saturday and Sunday). To support planning, we will always make your schedule available two weeks in advance.

    You will need to have:

    • Ontario Certified Personal Support Worker Certificate and/or National Association of Career Colleges (NAC) Certificate, or Certificate in Home Support Worker (Level II, III), or Developmental Service Worker program, Health Care Aide, Foreign-Trained BScN or Doctor, Paramedic Graduate, BScN Nursing Student, or second year RPN student.
    • Clear Vulnerable Sector check (obtained within previous six months)
    • Up to date immunizations for diphtheria, tetanus, polio, rubella, and hepatitis
    • Negative tuberculosis test
    • Must have a current valid driver’s license and own vehicle insurance policy
    • Experience with Palliative Care is considered an asset
    • First Aid CPR is considered an asset
