A Brand New Storytelling Experience
As the seasons change, so do our interests as we age. At the Lan-Char Support Centre in Lancaster, the summer season brought a new and exciting program for a generation that truly embraced the fine art of letter writing. “Flower Letters” are a series of letters sent throughout the year that piece together to tell a vivid story. However, Flower Letters are more than just…letters. Each letter is intricately researched, and highly interactive works of historical fiction that engages its reader. The first story the ladies from the Lan-Char Support Centre are indulging in is the Adelaide Story.
Set back in England in the 1800’s, the story evolves as each letter is delivered and read over time. Included in each delivery are small tokens to help bring the story and characters to life. Patricia Vincent, a Carefor client explained, “It feels like the story is coming to life. The pictures and items included in the letters helps you create a connection to the characters, as though you know them.” Others like Sonia Emberg feel, “It’s nice that the letters are actually written and sent by mail since everything is e-mail and electronic nowadays.”
Activities like the Flower Letters are just one of the many ways the Carefor Support Centres are able to bring people together to socialize and make new friends in the community. Tina, the Lan-Char Team Leader explained, “As people age, it can become challenging to sit and read a book from cover to cover. Activities like Flower Letters are a great way for people who enjoy reading to continue to do what they love and have a lively discussion with others. It’s amazing to hear everyone’s take on the outcome.”
Offering diverse activities to seniors in rural communities gives opportunities for people who may otherwise keep to themselves to get together. Carefor’s donors make it possible for the Support Centre Teams to get creative and bring programming to life to better enrich the lives of local seniors. We are so grateful for our donors.
