It generally depends on the type of service you’re looking to access.

    • Nursing clinics are used by existing Carefor clients and via physician referral.
    • Respite services can come though physician referral but people can also self-refer.
    • Retirement homes act similarly to private retirement homes and do not require a referral though residents are required to meet certain criteria.
    • Hospice clients are referred by their physician and can self refer.
    • Seniors support centres and their services are open to their communities.
    • Going Home is accessed through hospital discharge departments
    • Meal delivery is coordinated through seniors support centres in Eastern Counties and Civic Complex in Pembroke.

  • Do services cost money?

Some do but most are covered under OHIP. It’s best to refer to the page of the program you want to access to learn more.

  • Who do your programs support?

We work to support people with various needs but generally our staff work with seniors and people living with disabilities in helping them live their best lives with choice and dignity. We also support and work with those in their circle of care including family members, physicians and other healthcare providers.

  • Is Carefor for profit?

No, we’re a not-for-profit charity with a volunteer Board of Directors. We receive our funding a variety of ways, mostly through government contracts to provide home healthcare and community support services. We also receive revenue directly from clients and residents in certain circumstances including rent at our retirement homes and marginal costs to access programs and services such as transportation and meal delivery.

  • Does Carefor accept donations?

Yes! We are a charity and gladly welcome donations. As we receive the majority of our funding from the Provincial Government for contracted services, donors support us in a variety of essential ways beyond this care, including staff training, equipment, renovations, safety upgrades and subsidizing low-cost seniors to access certain programs. Additionally, Carefor Hospice requires 60% of its funding to come from donations and community support. To donate visit carefor.ca/donate

  • How long has Carefor been operating?

Carefor was established in Ottawa in 1897 as the founding chapter of the Victorian Order of Nurses. Shortly thereafter other branches were created serving Renfrew County and Eastern Counties. In 2006, we separated from VON to become Carefor Health & Community Services.

  • How many staff does Carefor have?

We currently have 1,400 staff providing services across Eastern Ontario in a variety of ways including home care, community support services, retirement as well as back-office support – IT, HR, finance, communications and fundraising and more.

We are currently recruiting staff for a variety of positions. Visit carefor.ca/careers to learn more.
