THE OPPORTUNITY – Registered Practical Nurse (RPN) – Full Time
Carefor Health & Community Services is in search of a Registered Practical Nurse at Richmond Care Home, which is a unique retirement residence dedicated to the care of women is living with dementia. Richmond Care Home is situated in the Village of Richmond, Ontario, where we offer a small, home-like, supportive environment for up to 16 residents.
Our residence is just minutes from Kanata, Stittsville, and Barrhaven. It is a quaint and prosperous community within the city limits of Ottawa. We are close to the medical centre, cafés, local restaurants and churches.
Please note that Richmond Care Home is not accessible by public transit.
This residence is a 16 bed secure bungalow in the heart of Richmond Ontario and is designed to help residents feel as though they are living in a home away from home. The living room, kitchen and dining area are the central hub of the residence with comfortable, familiar décor. Our highly trained staff are encouraged to wear regular clothes instead of scrubs or uniforms, as this encourages our residents to feel even more at ease.

As a member of Richmond Care Home Team and reporting to the Nursing Manager, your goal as a Registered Practical Nurse is to enhance the lives of our residents by providing nursing services consistent with the standards established by Carefor and the CNA, and provide team leadership to the resident care workers.

What You Will Do:
As a Registered Practical Nurse, you will have multiple responsibilities. You will function as the team leader of the resident care team. Using your professional nursing knowledge you will assess clients, administer medication, and monitor/evaluate the overall well-being of the clients. In the absence of the Manager, you will be in charge to ensure the resident’s comfort and safety and that policies and procedures are being followed. You will work with other members of the health care team to help residents attain an optimal level of independence and well-being.
As a Registered Practical Nurse you will be required to work a minimum of six shifts per month, and one weekend per month.
As an RPN, you will provide a complete and relevant assessment of our client’s functional abilities, general condition and activities of their daily living by following pre-set procedures. You will use your nursing strategies or interventions to implement the care plan based on the nursing assessment in collaboration with the Physician, Manager, and Resident Care Workers and review these quarterly. You will use the appropriate interview and communication skills to work with the client and the family to obtain the information required. You will also demonstrate respect for the client’s responses, choices and decisions, while evaluating their response to the care plan for the achievement of realistic client-centered outcomes, and revising the plan as required.
It will be important to describe and document your nursing practices clearly, concisely, accurately and appropriately according to our Carefor standards.
You know how to use adult learning principles and establish teaching materials to provide health teaching and support to clients, and the non-regulated care providers such as the resident care workers and volunteers.
You will check new medications and orders from the pharmacy and list the medications on the MAR sheets. You will be responsible for the admissions and discharges of clients as required and you will have a solid understanding and ongoing familiarity with the home’s fire, disaster and evacuation plans.
As we work in a team environment, you will participate in providing personal care, activities of daily living, preparing and serving meals and snacks, light housekeeping, and recreational/personal interest activities as necessary.
It will be important for you to keep up-to-date on changes and trends in the field of dementia care.
What We Are Looking For:
In our calm, comfortable-paced, responsive, and caring environment, we are looking for a self-starter who has the experience and ability to jump in on day one with compassion, enthusiasm and passion. As the ideal candidate, you will have your Registered Practical nursing certificate or your Registered Nursing degree. Your registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario is in good standing. It will be important for you to have a current Standard First Aid Certificate from an approved accredited program, which includes the CPR level C certificate.
It is important for us, our team and our clients that you will have demonstrated a passion for working with people with dementia. You will have strong communication skills, especially in English. Your excellent interpersonal skills and dealing with others in a team environment in an effective, compassionate and supportive manner are traits that you are known for. You will be known for your problem solving skills and your calm, demeanor and resiliency as this will come in handy as you build and establish, and maintain harmonious relationships with our residents and their families. You understand the importance and will have demonstrated that you can respect each resident as an individual and will be aware of their needs for self-respect and privacy, and the right to share in decisions about their care. You are the type of person that can organize your workload and respond efficiently and effectively to unexpected situations.
